TCS prepares for restructuring may ask non-performers to leave

BENGALURU: Tata Consultancy Services is preparing to undertake a restructuring exercise, under which senior executives which the country's largest information-technology services company believes are non-performers will be asked to leave.

Although details of this remain sketchy, the Mumbai-based software exporter downplays any such process by calling it a regular exercise undertaken by the company regularly.

I don't have a target in mind.. this is a year-long process. It is not new," said Ajoy Mukherjee , executive vice-president and global head (human resources). "We are a performer company and we try and help non-performers do well. In case we feel that this position is not suitable for them and they can flourish in other areas, we ask them to leave so they can do better.

These senior and mid-level executives who the company believes are non-performers will be asked to leave and the process is expected to be over by February next year. Although Mukherjee did not give any timeline, he said company is not looking at these layoffs because it wants to save on costs and will look across geographies when it undertakes this exercise.

Wipro's desire to become "a less bloated and a more nimble" organisation without firing employees is being driven because of growing embrace of disruptive technologies, including automation and artificial intelligence as it helps companies do away with engineers who are currently doing basic level repetitive work.

Some experts believe this trend also underscores the challenges facing the country's $108-billion (Rs 6 lakh crore) technology industry and mirrors the hiring trend at the large outsourcers. Between April 2013 and March 2014, the IT industry added only 13,000 employees for every billion dollars of revenue, as against 26,500 employees in the previous year, according to software industry grouping Nasscom.
